Do you need a phone number for your Airbnb or vacation rental?
Airbnb already handles numbers for confirmed bookings. That’s not the same question as whether your business needs its own.

What Airbnb’s number system actually covers
Airbnb verifies a phone number for hosts at signup and keeps it off the public listing. Once a reservation is confirmed, Airbnb’s own policy states it “may assign temporary phone numbers to allow guests and hosts to maintain their privacy.” Those numbers work like ordinary phone numbers, stay active “from the booking date until two days after checkout,” then expire, and Airbnb blocks real numbers from being exchanged through the platform in the meantime.
The three moments it doesn’t cover
That system is genuinely useful, but it only exists once a booking already exists. Three moments fall outside it entirely:
- Before a booking exists. A prospective guest comparing your listing against three others has a question right now, and this is the highest-leverage moment to answer it fast. There’s no Airbnb-assigned number yet, because there’s no reservation yet.
- Guests from another platform. Anyone who found the property through Vrbo, Booking.com, or your own site is outside Airbnb’s messaging and number system altogether.
- Repeat guests booking direct. A returning guest trying to skip the OTA fee next time needs an actual number to call, not another trip back through the app.
So what should a host actually do
Keep a dedicated number for the property itself, separate from a personal mobile, and make sure it’s actually answered rather than ringing out to voicemail. That one change covers all three of the gaps above, without touching how Airbnb’s own system works for guests who’ve already booked. The same setup works just as well for guest houses and B&Bs, covered separately in the guide to phone answering for bed & breakfasts.
What to look for in that number
Always-on coverage, so a pre-booking question at an odd hour still gets answered; multilingual capability if the property draws international guests; and something that doesn’t wake the owner for every routine inquiry. See how direct-booking capture by phone works in practice.
Phone numbers for Airbnb hosts: common questions
Does Airbnb give hosts a phone number?
It verifies a personal number at signup and assigns temporary numbers per confirmed booking, per Airbnb’s own help documentation, but it doesn’t give hosts a standalone business line.
What happens to Airbnb’s temporary number after checkout?
It stays active until two days after checkout, then expires, per Airbnb’s stated policy.
Do I need a separate number if I only list on Airbnb?
It’s still worth having one, since it covers pre-booking questions and any guest who reaches you outside Airbnb’s own messaging system.
How does SimplySpeak fit into this?
It answers that dedicated number around the clock, in the guest’s language, whether or not they’ve booked yet.
